They raced each other 10 times, from June 15, 1977, in the Youthful at Belmont, to August 19, 1978, in the Travers at Saratoga. Affirmed won seven of these matches including thrilling duels in all three Triple Crown races.
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Alydar
Mokay is Alydar’s grandson. Alydar, who is fated to be remembered as the shadow of 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed, was owned and bred by the great Calumet Farm under the leadership of Mrs. Gene Markey. He was a dark chestnut colt by the leading sire Raise a Native, who had earned a juvenile co-championship for Harbor View Farm before retiring prematurely in 1961, and out of Calumet Farm’s outstanding broodmare Sweet Tooth, the dam of champion Our Mims. Alydar’s broodmare sire was On-and-On, a stakes winning son of the leading sire Nasrullah and Calumet Farm’s champion filly Two Lea. Sweet Tooth’s stakes winning dam Plum Cake was a daughter of Ponder, the 1949 Kentucky Derby winner, and the champion mare Real Delight, both of whom carried the Calumet colors.
